The overall aim of the Thorne, Crowle and Goole Moors Water
Level Management Plan Implementation Project is to restore
the remnant raised mire into favourable conservation
condition. This may sound easy but, the activities of man on the
Moors over many years and the legacy of commercial
peat-winning, have left the Moors in a degraded state. It will take
many years for the Moors to become an active raised mire
system.
Work by Natural England over the past decade has improved the
conditions on large sections of the Moors but much remains to be
done. This plan aims to build on the work Natural England have done
and, over the next five years, create the conditions that will
allow the spread and colonisation of much of the remaining moor
surface by peat-forming vegetation. This will, over an extended
period of time, allow a functioning raised mire ecosystem to
redevelop.
