The Government is setting up 12 Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs)
in England, following on from the recommendations contained in the
Lawton Report, Making Space for Nature.
The Humberhead Levels, which contains Thorne, Crowle and
Goole Moors, have been short-listed for acceptance as an NIA,
although there are still two further hurdles to jump through and
the competition is stiff.
Designation as an NIA will attract additional central government
funding which will be used to fund additional conservation work in
the Levels to create wildlife corridors between existing areas of
habitat. This will allow these habitats and the species they
contain to become more resilient and better able to face the
challenges of climate change.
The Thorne, Crowle and Goole Moors Water Level Management Plan is a
key project in the NIA network, which also incorporates projects at
Broomfleet Washlands and at Potteric Carr, to name but a few.
